FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Artist TOBY BARNES to Exhibit at the Peekskill Project, Sept. 16th to October 7, 2006
The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary ArtÕs 2006 Peekskill Project will open this Saturday, September 16th, featuring on-site specific shows in the town of Peekskill, NY. As part of this project, Brooklyn-based artist Toby Barnes will present a provocative installation entitled Ò100 Faces of Tom Delay.Ó In the sullied millieu of contemporary politics, former US Representative Tom DeLayÕs recent corruption indictment and in particular, his mugshot, offers Barnes a site for exploring the paradoxes of contemporary representation. Printed during the heat of the indictment hearings across thousands of national and local newspapers, the mugshot went unnoticed by the great majority of Americans given its strategic manipulation to look like a portrait, undiscernable and innocuous. Working through the ÒinnocenceÓ and populism instrumentally projected and exploited by the mugshot, Barnes counter-manipulates DelayÕs amorphous image and reshapes it in the form of familiar social and cultural icons, shocking and provoking the spectator to resist the desire for forgetfulness and non-action of the original image, in all suggesting an alternative, if unintended, form of confessional. For an overview of the Peekskill Project and complete schedule of events, please consult the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art at (914) 788-7166 or visit the following website: http://www.hvcca.com/peekskillproject/ All events are free and open to the public.
